simplify structure
Fitness equipment tends to be bars bolted together to bars in a functional but inelegant way, especially with doorway gyms. It started with a sketch of a gentle unbroken line. We had to figure out a manufacturing strategy that kept the box small and efficient but achieved the design intent. The result is tubular and sinuous and simple, on budget and space efficient. Rare metal indeed.
Where the bars intersect we added a rubber fitting, inspired by cartilage in a knee. Slightly raising the height of this fitting also had the benefit of angling the front handle to just the right ergonomic position for the hand. Design is best realized when seemingly unrelated requirements meet in an elegant fashion.
While it is possible to create sketches with higher detail, sometimes the best approach is to work with a simple line or two and a highlighter. The genesis for the final solution came from the lower right hand visualizations. Once the big idea is established, it is just a matter of getting the details to harmonize in a supporting way.
